Participatory Budgeting in Italy
Public Governance & Transparency
This project hosts the first comprehensive nationwide mapping and database tracking Participatory Budgeting (PB) policies across Italian municipalities with over 2,000 inhabitants and later expanded to the whole territory. Coordinated by the Osservatorio Italiano sui Bilanci Partecipativi (OIBP), the initiative monitors the institutionalization of democratic practices where local citizens directly discuss, vote on, and co-decide the allocation of public funds and municipal budgets.
Methodology: A rigorous sampling frame and multi-level keyword web-search mapping strategy utilizing a standardized protocol. The methodology combines stringent and loose search-engine analysis to gather longitudinal data across thousands of municipal units, tracking the presence, discussion phases, and actual implementation cycles of local participatory projects.
